…every scribe who has been instructed in the Kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old. (Matthew 13:52)
Jesus tells his disciples that because they understood the old and the new, they are scribes and teachers and can discern good from evil, righteousness from wickedness. They could understand and live the gospel correctly and teach it, affecting the people around them with their wisdom and behavior derived from their knowledge of Christ. From that enlightenment, they brought Christ forward in their lives and shared him with the world.
A grace of enlightenment made me understand that the best and only means is to nurture and fortify within me the interior man that is Jesus Christ, to conceive Him, to bring Him forth, and make Him grow by all my actions, readings, prayers and adorations, and in all the relationships of my life. (March 23, 2nd meditation, from Peter Julian Eymard, Retreat Notes).
Our enlightenment comes from our knowledge of Christ, that is, our active relationship with him, through the Eucharist, his Word, and the life of the Church. As we grow in faith, acknowledgment, wisdom, and knowledge, together with Christ, we more accurately discern the correct path of our lives, which Christ invites us to thread fully in his company. Just like the scribes, we commit all our learning and the process of discerning the correct way so that with God’s help, we may also help the ones under our care to live rightly.
May we become courageous stewards of faith and wisdom in our homes and workplaces so our knowledge of the person of Christ and his wisdom may forever provide witness to his eternal love for us.
Prayer:
Lord, I had rather one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I had rather lie at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. (Psalms 4:11). Amen.
