In the seven verses of today’s Gospel, Jesus has three distinct actions toward the chosen twelve apostles; he calls them together, gives them authority, and then sends them out on a mission as his twelve.
Over the past three years, in the United States, we Catholics have been involved in a movement of Eucharistic Revival, which began at the bishop level in the first year. Year two was at the diocesan level, and this past year, parishes were to ignite the fire in parishioners for a more profound love and understanding of the Eucharist.
One week from today, July 17, over 80,000 Catholics of all ages are expected to converge on Indianapolis and gather at Lucas Oil Stadium for the National Eucharistic Congress opening session. This isn’t the end of a three-year revival; it is the beginning of the Mission!
Jesus has taught us through our studies, listening to homilies during Mass, daily prayer, and our life experiences. Now, it is our turn to strap on our sandals, fill our water bottles, apply our sunscreen, and hit the road to invite others back to the celebration of the Eucharist. As Jesus told his disciples, we can start close to home; we don’t have to journey to the ends of the earth. We can begin in our own families, neighborhoods, places of work, or organizations.
Nearly 2000 years ago, Jesus called his chosen twelve, gave them the authority, and sent them out. Today, He is calling us. Are you ready to answer YES to his call?
Invite someone to join you at Mass this weekend. Two simple words worked for Jesus, “Follow Me.”
Prayer:
Lord, give me the courage and welcoming words to bring one of your lost sheep back to our faith family. I ask you to protect all the pilgrims making their way to the Eucharistic Congress and bless them with safe travels along their journey. Amen.
