“The Lord is King; He is robed in majesty.”
Matthew’s Gospel recounts that Jesus taught humility and respect for authority. If we think of how we were all brought up, we probably recall the respect we were taught to have for our parents, elders, teachers, and, of course, the law and those entrusted with carrying out the law. Jesus reminds us that we are still bound to look up to those examples of authority today. We listen to those with words of wisdom, we follow exemplary life roles, and are called to teach that same respect to our children.
As Jesus speaks to us in the darkness, perhaps in our prayers, he challenges us to speak up and deliver his message bravely – his message of light – the messages of love, faith, hope, mercy, charity, healing, forgiveness, and courage. He comforts us by telling us not to be afraid because we are worth everything to God, our heavenly Father, because of our dedication to him.
Jesus reminds us that our souls cannot be destroyed, affirming the promise of eternal life to those who believe in him. Regardless of any evil surrounding us, Jesus says, “Do not be afraid.” We hear of the many atrocities existing in the world, the wars, the innocent victims held as hostages, those who are sick and deprived of medical attention, those who suffer from hunger, and those who have not heard the promise of Christ. How can we help? Perhaps we start right where we are as we pray in the presence of the Lord. How does God ask us to part with our treasure with others? Can we speak up with love? Can we give our time? “Here I am….send me.” Let this be our prayer today.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, great High Priest over the house of God, we look to you, in your merciful love, to receive our sighs of dejection and cries of anxiety. Teach us by the Sacred Mysteries to persevere in integrity of life, to hold fast to what endures, and to love the things of Heaven. Grant us spiritual protection and fervent joy for living in the fold of your Church. Amen. (from Praise God In His Holy Place by Bernard Camiré SSS)
