Daily Eucharistic Reflections

September 5, 2024

“Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you considers himself wise in this age, let him become a fool, so as to become wise.” (1 Corinthians 3:18)

Saint Thomas Aquinas spent his lifetime extracting wisdom from Scripture. His most outstanding work, The Summa Theologica, is considered a great treasure of the Church, and Thomas’s insights into our relationship with God are incredibly wise, reflecting a deep understanding of what our relationship with Christ should be. Yet, at the end of his life, he wanted to burn all his works after having an experience with God that convinced him all he had learned and strived to explain was “but straw” compared to the greatness of God and the vision of Heaven. He realized that his wisdom, attained through a lifelong pursuit, was incomplete.

We have been blessed with the knowledge and wisdom of the faithful who came before us. Yet, the sum of all their knowledge and understanding is still insufficient to describe the experience of God actively touching our lives. No description can fully capture how the Paschal Mystery affects us, and no number of words can describe being touched by the fullness of Christ in the Eucharist. This needs to be experienced.

We approach the Eucharist with open hearts, minds, and a humble disposition, offering ourselves united to Christ’s sacrifice. We ask our loving Lord to dwell in us, be present in our lives, and be one with us. How could we describe that fully in words when even Saint Thomas Aquinas could not?

Our insights will come from our active daily relationship with the Lord. Let us reach ever closer to Christ’s heart. In the Eucharist, we seek His knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. May we come to know Jesus intimately, as He desires to be known.

Let us pray:

Lord, help us to grow ever closer to you. May your Eucharistic love impart a strong knowledge and understanding of your presence in our lives. May we be able to share your insights with all who seek you? Amen.
