Memorial of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, virgin and doctor of the Church
Suffering truly tests our faith. It can change us and our mood or lifestyle rapidly if we enter into despair and feel we have no hope. Thérèse grew up with various obstacles but felt called to throw her pain into a way of sanctity as a Discalced Carmelite nun in Lisieux, France. Rather than following in the words of Job, who said, “Why have you made me a target?” (Job 7:11, 20), she turned to prayer, a relationship with Mary and offered her life for the sufferings of others as Christ did for us on the cross.
We do not want to hear some of these things when we are going through our rough periods. We perhaps ask God instead, “Why do you allow this to happen?” or, “Why are you allow cruelty in our world?” Through the centuries, people have also been persecuted and suffered tragedies beyond the imagination and natural disasters that ravage their lives. Our table fellowship in heaven will allow a more significant discussion with God.
For now, we look to the cross of Christ, the Crucified One who took passion, the death penalty, defeat, the loss of most of his disciples, and the horror of manipulative leaders and showed us the triumph over it all. That triumph reminds us that God does not forsake us but walks with us with our cross.
Let us pray as the psalmist: Let my prayer become before you, Lord! Who may I assist today and walk with them in their cross and suffering? Is there someone that needs me to bring them Holy Communion?
Prayer:
Beyond all telling, God strengthens me when I have moments of weakness in my faith. Help me trust that you will answer my cries when I call for help and grant me your mercy. Take away the pain and sadness that overwhelm me and give me the courage to weather my storms through Christ our Lord.
