Mary has chosen the better part…

We are called to choose how we will live the call to discipleship given at the moment of our Baptism and Confirmation. The Spirit gives us the wisdom and courage to make choices that will lead us to fulfill the words we say so often: thy kingdom come, thy will be done.

Today’s readings present three individuals and their choices to live their call to discipleship. For Saint Paul, the dramatic encounter with Christ led him to a radical change. He went from persecutor of the faith to a staunch defender. From enemy to Apostle!

For Martha, she chose to be busy serving Jesus and ensuring he experienced the best hospitality she could provide. Perhaps Jesus’s words to Martha are not so much a reprimand but a request that in her preparations, she not forget that he is there wanting to be with her.

Mary chooses to simply be with Jesus. To be in his presence, listening to his words. Mary chooses a counter-cultural act—women were to be where Martha was not sharing in the conversation with the guests. And yet, it is clear Jesus affirmed her being where Mary was.

Saint Peter Julian Eymard said: I was busy about many things like Martha, whereas this good Master wanted me at his feet. (Meditation, Vol. V) Perhaps this is an opportunity to reflect on what we are busy with. Each day, we are given choices on how we will spend our time, who we will serve, and how we will work to make the Kingdom come.

Do our choices include time and space for us to be at the feet of Jesus, listening to his word and allowing him to guide our actions? Do we realize that prayer is the ground of our service and love for others?

Let Us Pray:

Lord, open our ears to hear your call, be still, and sit in your presence. Open our hearts to long to be with you in silence and prayer. Open our wills to make time for you in our busy lives. May the Spirit guide us! Amen.
