Daily Eucharistic Reflections

October 30, 2024

“Lord, will only a few people be saved?”

We humans are curious individuals. When toddlers learn to talk almost immediately, they ask endless questions; it seems never-ending. Then, somewhere in the teens, the questions slow, but as adults, we again are confident enough to ask questions. I doubt the unidentified person asking this question of Jesus was the only one wondering the same thing.

How often have we Catholics been told by people of other faiths that we have not been saved? How frequently have we thought, as Catholics, that we were the “special” ones or that the Jewish people were “the chosen” ones? We are all wrong! It’s not because of what group we belong to but how we live our daily lives that will allow us to enter through the narrow gate.

Jesus doesn’t answer the numerical question but challenges the assumptions behind it. He continues to explain that people from all walks of life will recline at the table in the Kingdom of God. How people appear to us here on earth may not reflect the actual condition of their souls. Christ’s point is that rather than being concerned with the numbers of those who will be welcomed into heaven; we need to look inward and ensure we are faithful in our words and daily deeds.

Let each of us take some time today and reflect on any way we might not be honest with ourselves or others in how we are living our daily lives. Be open to God’s love and allow him to help us face our lives honestly and honestly. Now is the time to improve, for tomorrow may be too late.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, I pray that my love for you will always be honest, genuine, and complete. Open my eyes to see where I need to improve and provide the strength to make the necessary changes to be a true disciple and enter into Your Kingdom. Amen.
