Daily Eucharistic Reflections

January 31, 2025

Reflecting on today’s Gospel brings rich meanings from Jesus’ parables and thoughts from Saint Peter Julian Eymard.

Saint Peter Julian Eymard once said: “Jesus is the living bread sown in the stable; his tears are the moisture that makes him germinate, and the ear of corn will bow towards Calvary where it will be ground into bread.” He spoke of Jesus as a seed of the Kingdom of God!

So, I ask myself, what seed is growing within me? What kind of seed do I allow to germinate and take root in me?

Father Eymard once wrote: “When one receives a grace of interior renewal, at first, everything seems easy because one is under the gentle and amiable impression of grace; Then comes the time for the test. Either we do too much in the first hour or not enough. If we do too much, we quickly end up being discouraged at the first infidelity: it is the fruit of self-love. We relied too much on ourselves. If we do not do enough, it is the bitter reproach, not of conscience, but of the devil to tell us that all is already lost, that we are already unfaithful.”

The seed of God’s Kingdom needs to penetrate some of our hard soils, but sometimes, we think it is out of our own effort and then become discouraged when we fail.

Father Eymard continues: “Remember that in the service of God, fidelity and generosity are required, but not strength. Strength: it’s God!” Just as the seed grows secretly and the mustard seed becomes a large tree, the presence of Christ in the Eucharist can be subtle yet profound.

We are encouraged to trust in God’s hidden work. Let us nurture our faith with patience and humility, knowing that God’s kingdom grows in ways beyond our understanding.

Prayer:

Lord, we ask for your guidance in nurturing these seeds of faith, love, and generosity. Help us recognize the silent work of your Spirit in our lives and trust in your plan, even when we cannot see the whole picture. May we always be mindful of the subtle yet profound ways your Kingdom grows within and around us. As the mustard seed grows into a sheltering tree, let our faith grow to provide refuge and support to others. We humbly ask for the grace to remain faithful and generous in your service, trusting in your power to bring about the growth and transformation that only You can achieve. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
