Moses tells the people that they must “observe” the statutes and decrees of the Law and “teach them to your children and your children’s children.” (Deuteronomy 4:1,5-9) Jesus says that he has come to fulfill the Law and the Prophets and that “whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:17-19)
We certainly get the “obey” (or “observe”) part. The “teach” part: not so much. Jesus and Moses both refer to the Law (Torah): the five books that form the first division of Jewish scripture. Jesus adds the Prophets, the second of the three divisions, stressing that “I have come not to abolish but to fulfill” what these scriptures teach.
As Catholic Christians, we are a New Testament people. Jesus did not come to deny the Jewish scriptures or the Covenant God made with the Israelites to be their God and make them the Chosen People. Every person is chosen and brought into the fold with Our Lord’s New Covenant of love, forgiveness, and kindness. We do not need a rainbow, burning bush, or stone tablets to remind us of our path. We have a presence, and it is a real one! As our sign and guide, we have the very Body and Blood of the Anointed One: the Holy Eucharist!
Our path is very clear: follow and obey the Good News, Christ’s guidance for our mission. But never neglect teaching the Word of God through all that we say and all that we do. Actions speak louder. Actions preach. Actions teach! Wear your Christian identity proudly and happily! Let the world see the glow!
Let us pray:
Dear God, we hear your words of love, forgiveness, kindness, and grace. Help us to always walk in your ways and bring many more on this journey with us. Amen.
