Comforting words are expressed when Joseph is reunited with his father, Israel. His life was consumed with the loss of his son, waiting for his return. At this moment of their reunion, Joseph grasps his father, weeping for a long time in an emotional embrace. God is faithful to his promise.
In the Gospel, Jesus sets a challenge before his Apostles and before each of us. The Word proclaimed takes root in our act of worship to be sent forth in peace to glorify the Lord by our lives. Today, we are sent as lambs among wolves. A warning is given: Beware. Jesus warns of the evil that stands in opposition to the Gospel.
The reality of evil is seen in hostilities and violence that attack the security of 380 million Christians worldwide. In vast regions of Africa and Asia, people are vulnerable to outbreaks against their faith in Christ. Dreadful attacks are perpetrated against children who are innocent victims of these wars. The Holy Spirit calls us to seek justice and peace.
The persecuted continue to flee their homes looking for protection. Blockades will not provide a solution to the mass displacement of so many people. Father, this is the moment when words fail us. Have your Spirit be a mighty voice to send us from the Eucharist, “Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.”
Let us pray:
Trust in the Lord and do good, that you may dwell in the land and be fed in security. Take delight in the Lord, and he will grant you your heart’s desire. (Psalm 37: 3-4).
