The dramatic jealousy that leads the couple Miriam and Aaron to work against Moses ultimately results in Miriam’s “leprosy.” The nastiness of jealousy, as the Hebrew scholars demonstrate, turns us into an animal, one that ravages rather than redeems. Moses asks God for help, being a righteous person. The story continues.
Jesus makes us get into the boats. We are there to be with one another and with Christ, to learn, grow, and be challenged. It may cause twists and turns – waves! This is part of our challenge in living with people. We are to learn from one another and recognize that the Lord will save us, from ourselves and our doubts and fears, so that we do not become something we are not.
Why do we become insecure and not see the many gifts that folks have to add to the joy of the boat, the church, and our society? What is it in me that needs to be more accepting and understanding?
As the Psalmist echoes, we are to hope for a clean and renewed heart. Knowing ourselves more, acknowledging that we do not have all the gifts or answers, allows us to see that we need another to guide us along the way. This is so that when the storms do come in our lives, we do not have the waves overwhelm us, but instead, thrive with the notion that we can take on any challenge TOGETHER.
We are invited to the tent of the Lord to experience the warmth and love of God. We are invited to see the goodness of others who have much to offer in their humble ways. Let us be gentle and humble of heart as we expand our tent and welcome some newness of life.
Prayer
Lord God, you guide and challenge me to increase my tent. And be in your presence to see my faults and failings, but challenge me to grow in wisdom and maturity. Help me today to temper my fears, doubts, and jealousies so that I may grow in your likeness. Take away my anxious thoughts and help me to see the good in others. Through Christ our Lord.
