Many people wanted to know about Jesus. Some because of his message, others because of his healings, others because of his miracles. Others were just puzzled; others disbelieving and tried to explain him away. That was Herod’s case. He had heard so much about him that he wanted a personal meeting, or perhaps even a miracle or a display of the power for which Jesus was known. Shall we say that he was looking for theatrics?
It’s crucial to note that Herod’s approach was not rooted in faith-based seeking, the kind that Jesus often commended. Jesus consistently responded to those who sought him sincerely in good faith, but chose to remain silent in the face of empty show and hypocrisy. This perplexity about Jesus persists today, even among his followers, underscoring the significance of sincere seeking in our spiritual journey.
Jesus continues to pose this deeply personal question to each of us: Who do you say that I am? He reveals himself to those with honest and straightforward hearts. When our motives waver, we are encouraged to examine our consciences and seek guidance. Why am I seeking Him, trying to understand him, and desiring to be near him today?
In the Eucharist, Jesus has ingeniously found a way to be intimately close to the human heart, speaking directly to those who seek him in good faith. May the simplicity of our hearts open our eyes, minds, and hearts to him, fostering a deep spiritual connection and nourishment.
Let Us Pray:
Jesus, you taught the apostle Philip that you were the revelation of the Father. You sent the Promised Spirit so that he, in turn, would reveal you and enlighten us about your teaching and our own identity. Live and reign in our hearts
