Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary
During the summer, when my brother and I were young and my parents were teaching, our grandparents would come and retrieve us after very active summer camp days to “watch” us through the afternoon and eve. We would either have the choice of being inside with Grandma, watching the lineup of soaps on television, or outside in the vegetable and fruit garden with Grandpa. Due to his lack of English-speaking skill, grandpa didn’t talk much, but when old enough for me to get the courage, I asked him, “Grandpa, what are we doing out here?” In an inpatient voice, he replied, “We are watching the grapes grow.”
I realized later in life, the importance of just “hanging out” with the grandparents and in the midst of this, seeing how they each focused in their own way and were present to television or the garden. Between commercials or the intense sun, we would take a break, bake something inside, or have a sip of newly made wine in the garage. We were present and focused with moments of joy.
This is our call as Eucharistic disciples. To grow in our presence and stay focused on our task to choose the best part for ourselves. We are to notice, listen, focus, and watch “the grapes grow.” Praying the rosary, as we remember on this holy day, or praying with the Eucharist are opportunities for us to be in that presence, to put down “the apron” and the anxiety of the day, and choose the path of being mindful of Christ’s presence.
We follow a God who does not mark our iniquities, forgives, and redeems. How do we take the time to relent, forgive, and hear God’s voice? It’s time today to entrust the journey prayer time amid a busy life, and for the grape in me to grow!
Prayer:
As you lead your people, O God, you invite us to stay with you and hear the ways we can focus and boldly choose the best. Guide us always to seek the better part and integrate our contemplation and service to grow with you and the Body of Christ, through Christ our Lord.
