Daily Eucharistic Reflections

There is a particular law in the place where I am right now: people are discouraged from giving money or anything else to beggars in the streets. Anyone who violates this law faces a fine and possibly imprisonment. To me, this is the harshest law I have ever heard! What surprises me even more is hearing Christians who wholeheartedly support it. What is happening to us?

All institutions have laws, and we follow them for the sake of safety, security, and peace. For the Jewish people, the Sabbath holds special significance, as it unites them as a family, a society, and God’s chosen people. Yet in today’s Gospel, Jesus exposes the hypocrisy of those who value strict observance of the law over compassion and mercy.

“Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?”

Saint Peter Julian Eymard reminds us, “Christians serve God in a more perfect way, for we serve Him out of love and not out of fear.”

As a citizen and a Christian, I am called to obey the laws of the land, but not at the expense of the law of our Lord. I must find a way. While I may not be able to provide material assistance to our brothers and sisters who have so few options in life (though I still try, in ways that do not put my community at risk), I can always offer respect. Compassion can be shown by meeting their gaze and greeting them with a smile. I always remember them in my prayers; I kneel for them.

This is a challenge for all Christians and the entire Church. When faced with laws that conflict with our faith, are we ready to uphold the commandment of love above all else?

Let Us Pray:

Lord Jesus, you taught us that compassion outweighs mere obedience to worldly laws. Guide our hearts to see your presence in those who are marginalized and in need. Grant us the courage to act with love, even when rules discourage kindness, and help us remember always that your law is mercy. May your Spirit lead us all. Amen.
