The greeting in Romans prompts us to welcome all our brothers and sisters into our lives and presence. “Welcome” here isn’t a cordial “hello,” rather it prompts a profound expression of love. As God loves me, so I love you!
Today’s scripture was appropriate at the time of its writing and, as always, it is relevant to today’s materialistic society. Sure, who wouldn’t desire a pair of the latest sneakers? We seek financial security, we enjoy a well-earned vacation, and dinner in a special restaurant, and what grandmother doesn’t sacrifice to give that special something to her grandchildren?
However, the Gospel challenges us to be willing to give not solely from our excess, but even when it hurts. Jesus tells us that we must make that giving sacrifice for others, especially those in need. My friend once asked why I dropped money into the cup of a man who, in reality, may not be poor. My answer was: “It’s not up to me to question – it is up to me to give.” Jesus tells us to give without question, without judgment, and not solely from our excess. He also tells us it is impossible to serve God and love wealth.
I’m especially drawn to Jesus’ words of being trustworthy and reliable in all ways. How often are we called upon to keep a promise, to tell the truth, to be sincere? Our gospel emphasizes honesty in every area of our lives, including being honest with ourselves.
So, today we are challenged to give ourselves to our Lord. We must strive to look into the eyes of others and see God, and for them to see a reflection of God within our eyes. Imagine a world where all that is seen within each other is God!
Prayer:
Gracious God, I praise your name and thank you for the gift of this day, with the opportunity to reflect your love in the eyes of my brothers and sisters. I welcome them into my life today, whether it be for a moment in passing or for a long time to come. Open my heart to your will and help me to be the loving and giving person you created me to be. Help me to be strong in my conviction to do right and avoid sin, and guide my steps to the pathway of holiness. Amen.
