Memorial of Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr
As we read of the prophet Elijah coming to bring an end to wrath and to restore the hearts of fathers toward their sons, can we imagine what our world would be like if there were an end to wrath? An end to anger, an end to hate, an end to violence! A coming together of minds and hearts under God’s inspiration and leadership could do this!
Matthew explains that Elijah was meant to restore all; however, this mission would be furthered once John the Baptist alerted all to the ultimate savior, Jesus Christ. The people needed to recognize that Jesus came into the world to show the way to the Father. He was the one who would assume all sin as he died on the cross to open the gates of salvation for all eternity for those who believe.
Today we celebrate Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr, patron of Siracusa in Sicily and patron saint of the blind. Saint Lucy refused marriage, vowed virginity, and refused all worldly goods. As punishment for opposing and warning the notorious regime in power, it was ordered that Lucy’s eyes be gouged out; however, Lucy removed them herself. She was arrested and was to be forced into prostitution; however, legend says that order was divinely thwarted, but she was condemned to death by fire. She was impervious to the flames, so she was ultimately pierced by a sword in the neck. She is often depicted with a golden plate holding her eyes and holding a palm branch symbolizing victory over evil.
We have a challenge before us. Can we be the prophets of today, leading all to Christ? Can we speak no evil, think no evil, and do no evil? Can we open our hearts and love all our sisters and brothers?
Prayer:
Thank you for the gift of life! Lord, help us to turn to you; help us to see your face. Help us also see your face in the eyes of others and open our hearts so we can share the perfect love, peace, and hope that can only come from you. Amen.
