Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Each time we celebrate the feast of Saint Joseph, the Church invites us to contemplate a man who lived very quietly yet held an extremely important role in God’s plan of salvation. He did not preach, perform miracles, or leave a single spoken word in the Gospel. Yet his life of obedience, humility, and faithfulness became a powerful witness of faith.

Saint Joseph lived completely in obedience to the will of God. In the Gospel of Matthew, God’s will is revealed to him through dreams, and Joseph always responds promptly. He does not say “yes” with words, but with actions. Each time the angel wakes him, Joseph rises at once and does what he is told, even when it means setting out in the middle of the night. He always knows that he is responsible for protecting God’s treasures: the Child Jesus and his mother, Mary. Joseph accepts a quiet but very important role in the plan of salvation. Because he belongs to the line of King David and receives Jesus as his legal son, God’s promise to the house of David is fulfilled in Him. Joseph’s decision to take the pregnant Mary into his home is a decisive and foundational act. It protects both Mother and Child and becomes part of God’s saving plan. His role is truly great, yet deeply humble. He simply asks to be a servant in God’s work.

As we celebrate the feast of Saint Joseph, we are invited to stand in the place God has chosen for us in his plan of salvation and to carry out the tasks He entrusts to us with generosity and sacrifice. May we receive the humble faith and deep interior life of Saint Joseph.

Grant, we pray, almighty God, through the intercession of Saint Joseph, that your Church may faithfully care for the work of salvation which you first entrusted to his loving protection. May we follow his example and serve your plan with humble and faithful hearts. Amen.
