Today’s Gospel continues the dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus. Through this conversation, Jesus reveals to him—and to all of us—the purpose of his coming into the world: to save humanity.

In response to this mission of Christ, each person must make a choice: to believe or not to believe. Those who believe receive life; those who refuse to believe turn away from the gift of salvation.

Jesus is the one who comes from heaven. He comes to bear witness to the Father and to reveal God to humanity. Yet many people did not accept his testimony, even though they heard his teaching and saw the signs he performed.

The Gospel of John reminds us of the origin of Jesus. He is the one who comes from above. Saint John writes: “And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14). Through his Death, Resurrection, and Ascension, Christ has opened the way that leads humanity to eternal life.

What remains, then, is our response. God gives us light and life, but the choice to accept or reject this gift is ours. Those who welcome the light walk in life; those who refuse the light remain in darkness.

To believe in Christ is not simply an idea. It is a decision to walk in the light of God. Whoever chooses what is good moves closer to God, for God is the source of all goodness. But whoever chooses evil moves away from God, because in him there is no darkness at all.
