What a WONDERFUL day to be a Catholic! Today’s celebration of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Saint Anthony of Padua is a blessing for all.
In 1 Kings 19:19, Elijah invites Elisha, a wealthy farmer, to leave his livelihood and follow Jesus. Reminding us that God’s call often comes unexpectedly, even in the midst of ordinary work, and requires courage and surrender. Similarly, Psalm 16:1b-2a proclaims, “You are my inheritance, O Lord…,” underscoring the love between God and his people and the humility to recognize Him as our ultimate treasure.
St. Anthony of Padua exemplified the virtues of surrender and devotion. Born in 1195, he left a life of privilege to join the Franciscans, dedicating himself to preaching, serving the poor, and spreading the Gospel. Known for his eloquence, he converted countless hearts with his sermons, earning him the titles of “Hammer of Heretics” and “Doctor of the Church”. Like Elisha, Saint Anthony left behind worldly attachments to fully embrace God’s mission.
As the patron saint of lost items, Saint Anthony’s intercession is sought not only for material losses but also for spiritual ones, including loss of faith, hope, and direction. His life teaches us that God’s grace restores what is broken and guides us back to Him.
The Immaculate Heart of Mary completes this teaching. Mary, as a model of perfect discipleship, embodies hope, charity, and obedience. Her heart, free from sin, reflects pure love and trust in God’s will. Together, Saint Anthony and Mary (our Blessed Virgin) remind us of the richness of Catholic heritage and the call to live holy lives.
We are called to honor the saints who guide us and to live with the conviction that my 3rd-grade catechism teacher taught: “God does not make junk.” May we, like Saint Anthony, answer God’s call with courage and humility, trusting in His love and providence.
