Our gospel reading today is a wonderful story of a man saved by the faith of his friends. We don’t know what caused the man to become paralyzed, but imagine the hopelessness that he must have felt as a result of his condition. Interestingly, Jesus was not moved with pity toward the paralyzed man himself; rather, he was moved to heal the man (first, his soul, and then his body) by the faith of his friends.

This story speaks of the awesome power entrusted to us as members of the body of Christ. We participate in the redemptive process! Our Gospel acclamation today affirms this: “God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:19)

In our Catholic tradition, there are many examples of saints who were “saved” or supported by the faith of others. For instance, Saint Augustine was known for being a wayward youth until his mother, Saint Monica, spent decades praying for his conversion, fasting, and interceding on his behalf. What a testament to perseverance in prayer!

If we have a friend who does not know Christ or has become paralyzed by overwhelming circumstances, we must not let that friend go. Rather, our faith and our calling compel us to bring our friend into Christ’s presence for healing – sometimes in prayer, sometimes in walking the rocky road alongside that friend, sometimes by leading that friend to the foot of the cross. In the words of Saint Peter Julian Eymard, “Be the apostle of the divine Eucharist, like a flame which enlightens and warms, like the Angel of his heart who will go to proclaim him to those who don’t know him and will encourage those who love him and are suffering.”

Let Us Pray:

Heavenly Father, thank you for the unique purpose and calling you have placed on my life. I am humbled that you would choose me for this work, and I acknowledge that I cannot fulfill it in my own strength. Lord, when doubts creep in or the path ahead feels heavy and uncertain, grant me unwavering faith. Remove the distractions that pull me away from your will, and give me the wisdom to discern your voice above all others. When I feel weary, renew my spirit; when I am afraid, give me courage to take the next step. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
