Independence Day (in the USA)

“As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we find ourselves invited into a moment of profound reflection and renewal. Anniversaries are not merely occasions for nostalgia or celebration. Authentic remembrance always orients us toward renewal; it calls us to consider not only who we have been, and who we are becoming—but, by God’s grace, who we are called to be.” (Archbishop William E. Lori, In Charity and Truth: Toward a Renewed Political Culture)

One of the readings chosen for today’s celebration is from James 3:13-18: “Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show his works by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom. … And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace.”

How often are we tempted to ignore the harmful actions of a person in power because we believe they can be instrumental in the good we hope to achieve? Injustice can’t be ignored or excused. “The end doesn’t justify the means” (CCC 1753). Bad actions must always be condemned, especially when they go against the dignity of the human person.

Whom are we called to be?

“When you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you” (Luke 14:13-14).

Our identity is not in a political party or an ideology, but in Jesus Christ. The Blessed Sacrament is always calling us to communion and unity. Whichever group or party is in power, a Christian will be challenged to be light in the darkness and to cultivate peace. In union with our bishops, who consecrated our nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, let us listen closely and walk together where his Heart leads.

Let us pray:

“O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, may your holy Catholic Church serve as a sign, pointing all people to your infinite love. O Desire of Nations and Center of History, we ask you to bless these United States of America. Amen.” (Excerpt from: On the Occasion of the U.S. Bishops Consecrating the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus)
