Memorial of Saint Benedict, Abbot
History offers us countless lessons about the dangers of placing faith in worldly leaders and forgetting the eternal paradise that lies beyond this life. Consider, for example, a man named Adolf, who rose to power as Germany’s chancellor in 1933. He promised a new Reich, a new realm of prosperity and strength, but his heart was filled with hatred and destruction. His leadership brought devastation, proving that when leaders abandon God’s truth, they lead their people into darkness.
Matthew 10:14-33 reminds us of the importance of fearing God rather than man. Jesus prepares His disciples for persecution, urging them to boldly confess their faith and remain steadfast in their relationship with the Lord. This passage calls us to courage, to trust in God’s authority over the soul, and to reject the allure of leaders who seek power without righteousness.
Yet, Scripture also shows us that God raises up leaders for his purpose. In times of trial, he calls individuals to defend truth and justice, to stand boldly against evil, and to protect the values of faith and freedom. As Christians, we must discern the times and pray for leaders who seek to uphold God’s will, even when they face opposition.
Saint Peter Julian Eymard reminds us of the Real Presence in the Eucharist, calling this simple consecrated bread “Holy of Holies” and the source of all holiness. When we receive the Eucharist, we embrace Christ Himself, drawing strength and grace to confront the challenges of our time.
Jesus performed miracles to reveal God’s power and love. Today, we are surrounded by miracles and acts of courage, truth, and faith. As members of the Body of Christ, let us revere God, who has authority over the soul and final judgment, and pray for leaders who defend what is good, true, and holy.

Saint Benedict, admirable Saint and Doctor of Humility, you practiced what you taught, assiduously praying for God’s glory and lovingly fulfilling all work for God and the benefit of all human beings. You know the many physical dangers that surround us today are often caused or occasioned by human interventions.
