In the first reading, Jeremiah prophesies that the Ark of the Covenant will no longer be the center of Israel’s identity. The nations will gather in Jerusalem, and the people will no longer walk in the hardness of their hearts. To many Jews of his time, this must have sounded shocking, even offensive. Yet Jeremiah taught that what made them special was not the Ark itself but their being God’s people, called to hear His word and live by it.

In Jesus’s explanation of the parable of the sower, He makes clear that what matters most is how we receive the word of God. It is not enough simply to hear it; we must understand it, follow it, and let it take root in our lives. We know we are in good soil when we bear fruit. In one sense, these are the Fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity; given through God’s grace and strengthened in us through the Holy Spirit. In another sense, it may be seen in how many lives we have touched for good under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus describes the four kinds of ground as the different ways we can respond to Him: the path as the hardened heart, the rocky ground as the shallow heart, the thorny soil as the divided heart, and the good soil as the receptive soul. In this world, it is easy to lose our way, but through the gift of free will and God’s grace, we can choose to have hearts of good soil. Each of us has different gifts and talents from God, so the fruit we bear may look different, but all of it is meant to give glory to God and bless the world.

Lord Jesus, let the seed of your Word find good soil in me today. Break up what is hardened, soften what has grown dry, and clear away whatever chokes your life in me. Amen.
