Daily Eucharistic Reflections

August 17, 2026

In Matthew 19:16-22, the rich young man asks Jesus how to gain eternal life. When told to sell all his possessions and follow Christ, he walks away sad. This text connects deeply to the Eucharist: the real “treasure” we receive at the altar asks us to let go of our false attachments so that Christ can fill our empty hands and hearts.

The Trap of Self-Reliance: The young man relies on his own good deeds and wealth. He asks, “What do I still lack?” thinking eternal life is a prize to win rather than a gift to receive. In the spiritual life, holding tightly to our own securities leaves no room for God.

The Eucharist as Radical Detachment: The Eucharist is Christ pouring out His entire self, holding nothing back. To receive Him worthily, we must acknowledge our spiritual poverty —recognizing that our earthly “possessions” or ego cannot save us. Jesus asks us to lay down our pride, our comforts, and our sins at the altar.

Entering the Exchange: Jesus invites the young man to “come, follow me” after his letting go. The Eucharist transforms us, giving us the grace to trade our small, tightly clutched worldly worries for the infinite wealth of His divine life. Instead of walking away grieving like the rich young man, we approach the table with open hands, ready to be emptied and refilled by the grace of the Eucharist.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, you asked the young man to give up his riches and follow you. In the same way, when we offer the gifts of bread and wine, we have the courage to let go of our earthly attachments. And we receive you fully in the Eucharist. Amen.
