How often do we pause to thank God for the gift of faith? In today’s reading, Paul opens his letter to the Corinthians with gratitude — not only for his own calling, but also for theirs. I often grieve the loss of faith in close family members and friends. Yet, I’m asking myself whether it would be better to rejoice in the faith that has been given and received by so many: families, communities, and parishioners. There lies our strength. Let us not take the gift of faith for granted.

When we celebrate the gifts God has given, they become stronger and will become more attractive to others. The Gospel speaks of a coming that will be sudden and unexpected, the need to stay alert and ready. Faith keeps us watchful and attentive, helping us read the signs of the times. The upheavals of life remind us how necessary vigilance is. It is not easy to interpret current events; often, in hindsight, we grasp how God has been at work in our lives.

Watchful awareness opens our eyes to Jesus’ nearness, the power of his presence, the Kingdom already close at hand. Listening carefully for the footsteps of the Beloved will give us light amid unexpected events. The Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ, celebrated in every Eucharist, reveal the meaning of our experiences—joys and sorrows, good and evil, peace and trials.

Lord, let me see your mysterious guiding hand in daily events, great and small, personal and social, expected and unexpected. Your love is beyond all measure and beyond our understanding.
