What the World Needs Now …

Catholicism has had a history of detractors who have imposed their beliefs and protocols with the intent to separate them from their Christian community. We are scattered children looking to fit in some comfortable, practical community, or bonding is simply not necessary for some individuals.

But hear Paul’s voice lovingly urging this new community of Christians to show love and kindness to each other, just as God loves and cares for us, and warned the dangers that lurk in the “tulgey wood.” His first words to be kind, compassionate, and forgiving are our defense against everything that keeps a community divided.

The story is powerful. A young, crippled woman, touched by a devilish spirit, attends the synagogue service. No one pays attention to her, but Jesus looks over the crowd, sees the poor woman, and takes pity on her. Jesus cures her, and she stands up straight.

At times we are also bent over and can’t see the walking wounded in need of a kind word. We are obligated to be compassionate, to give the love of Christ to others. It’s a love-starved world. Feed my people.

A date to remember – On this date in 1834, Father Eymard began his first assignment as the assistant parish priest in Chatte, France, where he remained for three years.

Prayer:

May the works that we do be a true recognition of God’s work within us.
