An inquisitive man asks what he must do to gain eternal life. Jesus’ response included several answers. First, one must obey the commandments listing things that should not be done and others that are the right ways to live. The man said that he had observed all these rules but still didn’t feel he was worthy to attain eternal life. Jesus said that if one wishes to be perfect, they must sell what they have and give to the poor. After that, people should follow him, trying to be like God himself, the only One who is completely good.

In his instructions, Jesus sets the standards for all of us. In addressing our possessions, the question is, What are our priorities? Things or eternity? Are your belongings greater than your pursuit of goodness? Jesus wants us to attain a certain level of love for our fellow men. God is the standard of goodness humans can never achieve; try as we might. What will count when we die is the kind of person we became.

The man questioning Jesus was clearly not devoted to God because he had other priorities – his possessions were his focal point. He was certainly not ready to sell everything and give away his money. He wanted to be good, even perfect, and gain eternal life, but he was unwilling to part with the things he treasured most.

Jesus wants and is worthy of all our devotion. If we have pursued Jesus, we have everything. If we want to be as good as we can to experience eternal life, Jesus tells us what to do. Nothing in our lives comes before God.

Sweet Jesus, we are truly human, sometimes stumbling and falling along the way. We get caught up in our everyday activities and pursuits. Light a guiding beacon in our souls to keep us focused on the way home. Perfection is beyond our reach, but we will try harder to attain the level of goodness that you have set for us. You have assured us of your love and that you are always nearby. We will reach for you at times when we weaken as we strive to become worthy of a future in your presence. Amen.
