Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,…

The above phrase is taken from the epistle for this feast. Ignatius, the third bishop of Antioch, is famous for the seven letters he wrote to various churches he would pass on his way to Rome. He had been condemned to die in the arena by the emperor Trajan. Ignatius was a mystic, and in his letter to the Romans, he pleaded with them to do nothing to prevent him from martyrdom. In a poetic passage, he said, “Allow me to be ground by the teeth of wild beasts so that I may become the pure bread of Christ.” Two lions killed him.

Ignatius was convinced that he was blessed in Christ and was especially appreciative of the blessing of the Eucharist, hence his allusion to it in the above quote. In another passage, he says, “I have no taste for corruptible food nor for the pleasures of this life. I desire the bread of God, which is the flesh of Jesus Christ, who was of the son of David; and for drink I desire his blood, which is love incorruptible” (#73).

Aware that Jesus had shed his blood for him, he eagerly sighed for the crown of martyrdom, that his blood might show his gratitude for the sacrifice of Christ and serve as a blessing for his flock. Thus, he proved himself a faithful pastor of souls, a good shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. His example has enabled many to deepen their love for Jesus, thus allowing them to do great things for the Lord.

How do I live out my love and gratitude to Jesus?

Let Us Pray:

May my appreciation of the depth of your love for me enable me to make my whole life an act of gratitude. Help me find the inspiration I need to be faithful in the Eucharist.
