Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
The first reading says, “The lost I will seek out, the stray I will bring back.” We read in St. Luke, “Rejoice with me for I have found my lost sheep.” The Sacred Heart of Jesus loves his people immensely. Our response to a loving God should be heartfelt. Pope Francis declared the Year of Mercy, offering a plenary Indulgence for those who repent and pass through the Holy Doors of designated churches.
Over the centuries, we have had examples of the Lord seeking out those who are lost and bringing them safely home. Through Jonah, the Lord sought out the people of Nineveh, and they responded. At Fatima, Our Lady called us to prayer and repentance so that God’s love might overcome the suffering and evil in the world. Through Mary, we are drawn into the love that the Sacred Heart has for each of us.
In this troubled time, we are in a Year of Hope. This hope in God’s love can lead us, as it has in the past, to healing and wholeness. Through this healing love, let us experience once again the words in the Gospel: “Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.” I tell you, in just the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who do not need repentance. (Luke 15:3-7).
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You gave your life for us. Your Sacred Heart is ablaze with love. Your hand extends towards me, and all, offering love, mercy, and healing. Sacred Heart of Jesus, may your love transform me. Burn away my hesitation, that I may become your love and radiate your mercy. Amen. (We Become What We Receive, by Jill Rauh -USCCB
