Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene
Today, we honor the profound love of Saint Mary Magdalene for Christ, a love that led her to be present at the pivotal moments of his death and resurrection. Her life serves as a powerful example of the disciple-apostle phenomenon. She was not content to simply be near the Master, but she also ventured out to share all that she had learned from him. Her dedication earned her the title of ‘apostle to the apostles’. In our Eucharistic vocation, we are called to emulate her, to celebrate Jesus in the Cenacle, to adore him, and to live our lives by the teachings we celebrate.
As disciples, let us never cease to be at the feet of the master. To celebrate the Eucharist in his memory. To sing praises to the Father. To unite as children of one Father. To adore in Spirit and truth. Saint Eymard’s words remind us of the transformative power of adoration at the feet of the Master. He said that one adoration at his feet was enough to make Mary Magdalene chaste and an apostle after the resurrection. Let us, too, cultivate a special bond with our Master in our lives as disciples. Mary’s relationship with Christ was reestablished in a few words: Mary-Rabboni. In the cenacle of adoration, let us find those expressions that bring us closer to Jesus, and through them, feel the closeness of Christ in our lives.
As apostles, we are called to leave the cenacle and live what we preach. Our actions should be a living testament to the gospel, and where necessary, we should use words (attributed to Saint Francis Assisi). Mary used very few words to inform the apostles of the mystery of the resurrection. Her few words express her deep love for Jesus, because her actions spoke more. May her life inspire us to be apostles of action and good news. Let us today give special thought to all those spreading the good news of the resurrection, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
Let us pray:
Almighty God, Saint Mary Magdalene loved your son so much. As we celebrate her today, may we renew our love for Christ in the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. We make this our prayer, through Christ our Lord.
