Memorial of Saint John Vianney, Priest

Today is the Memorial of Saint John Vianney, a dear friend of Saint Peter Julian Eymard. In his lifetime, he encouraged Peter Julian in his eucharistic work and even acknowledged him as a “great saint.” “A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he that has found one has found a treasure.”

True friends encourage us to accomplish more in our lives through advice, a kind word, a correction, encouragement, or solace. We would probably fall short of our true potential on this spiritual journey without the support of a treasured friend, a loved one, or a faithful spouse.

In today’s Gospel, we find Jesus pulling away to mourn the death of his cherished friend and cousin, John the Baptist. The one who announced the way for Jesus, and as the truest of friends, gave his mortal life specifically to lead others to the author of Love Himself.

After a short time of grieving, Jesus takes the lesson a step further and immediately turns to care for the needs of everyone else in the feeding of the five thousand, a foreshadowing of the “Gift of gifts.” The gift that cost Jesus the ultimate price. Jesus allowed Himself to be sacrificed totally and completely for each one of us. He desires to be our beloved! He could not imagine us without His intimacy and friendship. We would be lost. Jesus is always present in the tabernacle, in Adoration, and every reception; he is eternally and truly present to listen, to love, and to heal.

Are we truly present to others? Are you that Eucharistic friend who always seeks the good for the other and not for oneself? Would you give your very life for a friend?

Imagine a Eucharistic world!!

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we ask you to embrace and comfort those who are mourning the passing of loved ones in the recent flooding tragedy in our Texas communities. Help us to be your light and your love to those who need us during this time of loss and devastation. In Jesus’ Holy Name we pray!
