The first reading and psalm are perfect to include in our funeral liturgy planning. We are reminded of the “end times” and how we have nothing to fear, for the times and seasons will guide us as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of the Lord. Eymard’s view, that “tomorrow [would be] too late,” encourages us to remain ready for Christ’s return while encouraging and strengthening one another. There is nothing more Eucharistic than building up one another, affirming and complimenting them to help them become better people. This is part of the “good things of the Lord” that we see here on earth now.

Today is a day for us to see the positive, good, and blessings around us. In our different personalities, some of us struggle with seeing the glass half full or our positive realities and blessings. The Psalm reminds us of the loveliness of the Lord, who is always present and feeding us. We are constantly being filled and cared for, part of the “good things in the land of the living.”

Returning to the weekday lectionary and Luke’s Gospel, we hear the marvelous beginnings of Christ’s ministry. If we suffer from negativity, could we pray for the release of this demon in our own lives and for the hope of a cure that brings positive and affirming outcomes?

We hope to grow in holiness throughout the year. Our attention to the coming of Christ is reflected in every Mass (e.g., the Embolism after the Lord’s Prayer) and is part of our daily focus on the future. As we wait, let’s pass the time with encouragement and affirmation to build up the spirit of joy that will make each of us a better servant of Christ.

Prayer:

O God, as we wait for your Christ to return, come into our hearts and quiet the worries of our lives. Renew us to see and seek the blessings that give us hope and courage. May we cherish these blessings and share them with our sisters and brothers until we are reunited at the banquet feast of heaven, through Christ our Lord.
