Memorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio)
Today, we join the Capuchin Friars in celebrating Padre Pio, a very pious man of God whose life was very sacramental. He was rooted in prayer and service to the spiritual needs of the people. His ministry faced a lot of criticism from the leaders of his time. He was trying to live by his conscience. This seemed odd to the ordinary leaders. He is a true brother to Jesus. Seeking to act out on the word of God.
Padre Pio, in many ways, represents the spiritual leaders who navigate the delicate balance between the law and faith. Without being disobedient, one can stand firm in their calling, as Padre Pio did. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of faith and prayer in leadership. Let us take this opportunity to pray for the Holy Spirit to take action, just as it did in the life of Padre Pio.
The first reading from the Book of Ezra makes life so beautiful. We look at this symphony between the religious leaders and the civil leaders. The civil leaders have one agenda: following the will of God as manifested in the scriptures. They fought for the return of exiles. They fought for the proper completion of the House of God. They looked forward to the good celebration of the liturgy on its dedication and many other things. They also had good international relations.
How I wish this would come back today, when civil leaders would give God his place. When countries were built on divine law, God would receive the most tremendous respect. Saving lives would occupy our minds more than saving territories through war. That religious practices would not only be accepted but would also be the law, which would lead to beautiful relations amongst countries. May this be our prayer.
Let us pray:
Almighty God, we pray for our religious leaders today. That they may always be guided by the Holy Spirit manifested in their superiors. We pray for our civil leaders that they may love you more dearly, follow you more closely, and serve you more and more in their offices.
