Reading today’s gospel, I tried to put myself in Mary’s place during the Annunciation. It didn’t go well. I got as far as standing before Archangel Gabriel and saying ….” Hold that thought, I’ll be right back…”
The incredible trust, faith, and courage it took for Mary to say “yes” to God were incomprehensible. Mary’s faith and trust truly came from the depths of her heart. An adolescent girl, having to explain to her parents —Saint Ann, Saint Joachim, and Saint Joseph —that an angel had visited her, made such a request. I can only imagine the amount of love, trust, and support they gave to Mary, for they, too, answered God’s call.
When Archangel Gabriel came to Mary, it was not just a moment in history—it was an invitation for all of us. Mary’s response was not one of fear or hesitation, but of incredible trust: “Be it done unto me according to your word.” In that moment, Mary became the model of faith, surrender, and obedience. Her “yes” changed the course of history and opened doors, allowing Jesus, in his humanity, to come and remind us of who we are.
Saying “yes” to God isn’t easy. It requires sacrifice, patience, and courage. It is found in forgiving others who have hurt us, or giving our time to someone in need. It is found in feeding the poor or clothing those who have little.
Daily acts of surrendering ourselves to God’s will are living OUR Annunciation. Saying “yes” to God is a lifelong journey of living Christ’s love in everyday choices. This, along with the Eucharist, is our greatest path to God.
Let Us Pray:
Lord, help us always to say “yes” and live the example Mary and others have set for us. To let go of what no longer serves us, and help us to believe and trust that You have everything under control.
