Day of Prayer for Protection of the Unborn Children
Reading the daily Scriptures or the daily newspaper has this in common: They reveal the complexity of the human heart. Today’s first reading unveils King Saul’s struggle with jealousy as he watches David’s success, while also highlighting the strength of friendship through Jonathan’s compassionate intercession. The Gospel presents another layer: impure spirits outwardly praising Jesus, not in genuine worship, but as a way to influence his mission. Jesus, in response, waits patiently for the moment chosen by his Father to reveal his true identity. Within these texts, we find jealousy, friendship, admiration, hypocritical praise, and humble prudence all woven together.
Just as jealousy and friendship shaped the lives of Saul and David, so too do conflicting emotions shape our modern discussions about life and choice. Today, large crowds gather in Washington advocating for laws that honor the dignity of those who cannot speak for themselves: Choose Life. The debate over freedom of choice evokes strong emotions and deep convictions on all sides.
The prophet Simeon foretold that Jesus would reveal the secrets of human hearts, a revelation that continues to touch the very core of our society. In moments of retreat and reflection, we are also invited to let the light of the Holy Spirit reveal and heal the depths of our hearts.
Prayer
Jesus, we thank you for the gift of life. We pray for our brothers and sisters, asking for wisdom and clarity to discern right from wrong, and for the grace to recognize the deeper truths behind public debates. May we learn to distinguish what is inspired by your Spirit from what arises from human frailty. Grant each of us the courage to examine our own hearts for the light of your truth, as we seek to reflect your love and justice in all our daily choices. Amen.
