We hear innumerable references to “Christ as the Light” in the Bible, as well as in hymns about Jesus being our light. Today, Jesus is not necessarily talking about himself as the light, but he is talking about us. He is talking about how all of us need to be the light, the faith, the truth, the goodness that he is and has taught us.
It is our turn to shine for others. Jesus is asking us to do his work here on earth; do not allow the light to be hidden. We should not be ashamed to be the voice or the influence of Christ in our lifetime. Rather, Jesus is emphasizing the importance of spreading the light of God‘s truth to those around us.
In all aspects of life, we are called to share the knowledge and love of God with others. It makes no sense to hide the light in ourselves; we should live it freely. And in knowing, believing, and loving God, we bring a significant purpose to our own lives; so, in sharing this truth, we could have an important influence on those who doubt or need comfort or stability.
If we hide our lamp, are we neglecting or hindering others from the truth of God?
Saint Peter Julian Eymard said, “We are to give of ourselves for one another, nourishing others.” In our openness and responsiveness to God’s word, nothing should be hidden; we should allow God’s truth and love to shine. Today’s reading challenges us to share our faith, be brave, and open to the challenges of living our faith. We are encouraged to figure out how we can let our light shine, not only in our own lives but also for others.
Do not hide your lamp; let it shine for others to see!
Prayer:
Oh Lord, give us the strength, courage, and knowledge to actively seek opportunities to share the light of God‘s word with others. May we always be an expression of the teachings of Jesus in our lives.
