Memorial of Saints Cyril, Monk, and Methodius, Bishop

Today’s reading incorporates a history lesson of political and religious maneuvers following the death of King Solomon (1 Kings 12:26-32) and the worship of false gods (verses 28-32). Humanity tends to take the path of least resistance, often failing to consider that we are provided with a guide, a virtual plan that allows humanity to choose its own pathway. Choice is a gift given to all people and should be embraced, not assumed.

The Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 119:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34) reminds us that celebrating the joy and blessings found in God’s perfect law (Torah) will light our pathway and protect us from false gods, Satan’s influence, and the pitfalls of daily living. Further, in Matthew 4:4b we read, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Every Catholic has heard these words, but do we consider that, while bread is necessary for the body, humanity has a more profound spiritual need that only God’s Word can fulfill? This more profound spiritual need is obtainable through our ability to choose God’s plan.

Jesus was followed by a great crowd for three days. In our Gospel (Mark 8:1-10), over 4,000 Gentiles were among those listening to his word; Jesus was concerned that they would “faint from hunger.” He took seven loaves and a few fish, gave thanks for the food, and blessed it, then began distributing it to the crowd. All were fed and their hunger satisfied. Jesus’s mission was to unite all nations, Gentile and Jew, bringing both spiritual and physical nourishment.

Today, Valentine’s Day has become a cultural celebration of love, romance, and friendship. Lost in this celebration are two remarkable brothers, born into wealth and a noble family, who chose religious life, becoming monks and priests. Saints Cyril and Methodius, also known as the Apostles of the Slavs, were missionary brothers.

Celebrate love, choose wisely.

Let Us Pray:

Father God, empower me to be a person of deeper love, heart, soul, mind, and strength, both for you and for those dearest to me. Help me build trust and authenticity, and to forgive those who have injured me. Strengthen my resolve to be an agent of hospitality to the lonely, comfort for the frightened, and mercy for the hurting. And, above all, guide my choices in life so that my actions are aligned with your teaching. Amen.
