5th Sunday of Easter
The 14th chapter of Saint John’s Gospel recalls the Last Supper of Jesus and his disciples. There is a dialogue between Jesus and the Apostles at the Passover. Thomas tells him he does not know where Jesus is going; how can he know the way? Jesus says: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Philip asks Jesus to show him the Father, which will be enough. Jesus says: “I am in the Father, and he is in me.”
In this farewell of their Master, Jesus reveals who he is, his divinity, and his humanity. He has asked them to follow him, to be like him. Jesus is in the Father and Holy Spirit. His mission is to share his life. He is the way to heaven. He is the truth, and so is his word.
Saint Peter Julian Eymard understood who Jesus was. The Father sent Jesus with love that is fire. Jesus gives it by his word and grace. Saint Peter Julian says that the Eucharist is the source of love and joy because Jesus is present in the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the summit and the source of the Christian life.
Let us pray
Father, you are in us, and we are in you. Jesus will lead us home in heaven. The Holy Spirit will welcome us in the mansions of heaven.
