26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp. Moses says, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets?
In the Gospel reading, the apostles express the same concern about someone who is not in their group casting out demons in the name of Christ. They act on the principle that if someone is not of their group, that person is an outsider, and they should not be able to use God’s power to do miracles.
As humans, we are quick to draw boundaries. We want to know who is in and who is not. We want to be sure the message is safe and that we are faithful to what God asks us to do. But sometimes we miss the point. Sometimes, we miss the bigger picture. God is always so much bigger than our human limits suggest. God always has more goodness than we can imagine.
Saint Peter Julian Eymard says in the Cenacle that the Holy Spirit communicates with us through the Eucharist. We are led to experience the goodness of God. We find in the Eucharist the heart of Jesus loving us to move us beyond our limited vision to see the world and others through the mind and heart of God.
The Eucharist at the center of our lives enables us to bring the broader vision of God into our lives and our world. The Eucharist empowers us to be the prophets our world needs today. May we follow Christ today and bring the Body of Christ, the Church, to birth in our lives.
Prayer:
Jesus, be with us this day as we strive to do Your holy will. Amen.
