Jesus prepares His disciples for a truth we often try to avoid: following Him will not always be easy. In today’s Gospel, He speaks of the coming of the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who will testify to Him. But He also reminds them that they, too, must testify… even in the face of rejection.
This strikes deeply. It means our faith is not meant to be hidden or comfortable; it is meant to be lived, spoken, and witnessed, even when it costs us something.
Saint Peter Julian Eymard understood this profoundly. His love for the Eucharist was not just devotion – it was mission. He believed that when we truly encounter Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, we cannot remain the same. We become witnesses. And like the early disciples, he faced misunderstandings, resistance, and hardship, but he remained faithful because he knew who he had encountered.
Personally, I’ve experienced moments where speaking about faith felt uncomfortable, where silence seemed easier. Yet, in those moments, there’s a quiet prompting within… the Holy Spirit reminding me: “You are not alone. Speak. Witness.” And somehow, grace meets us there.
Jesus does not promise ease, but he promises presence. The Holy Spirit walks with us, strengthens us, and speaks through us.
And so, we are invited not to shrink back, but to stand firm, to testify with our lives, our words, and our love.
Let Us Pray:
Lord Jesus, send us your Spirit of truth. Give us courage to witness to You in every moment, especially when it is difficult. Like Saint Peter Julian Eymard, help us to draw strength from your Eucharistic presence and remain faithful to your call. Amen.
