Memorial of Saint Peter Claver, priest
When we read the history of Saint Peter Claver, we encounter astonishing numbers—over 300,000 baptisms overall and 5,000 confessions heard each year. Nearly all of this was done among those held in slavery in what is today Colombia. His encyclopedia entry states that, “He is considered a heroic example of what should be the Christian praxis of love and of the exercise of human rights.”
One word here stands out: praxis.
Praxis means putting theory into action—living out what we believe, allowing our convictions to shape our choices and our work. It is the cycle where understanding fuels action, and action deepens understanding. Saint Peter Claver embodied this fully. His life was an exercise in living Christ’s love toward all people—free or enslaved—even under the harshest conditions. His convictions were not only taught but proven through years of unrelenting service, showing that, through us, God’s love, mercy, and compassion can reach those most in need, however we are able.
Saint Peter Claver lived an authentically Eucharistic life—sent where God willed, living his thanksgiving in service to those who could not help themselves. For doing Christ’s will in this selfless way, he endured political pressure and physical hardship for over 40 years until his death. In his perseverance, he left us an everlasting example.
Do we, like Saint Peter Claver, set out to live the praxis of love we receive from our Eucharistic Lord? Do we set out to show that love in action, even when it costs us something? Our call is just as Saint Paul writes:
“As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him, rooted in him and built upon him, established in the faith as you were taught, and abounding in thanksgiving.” (Colossians 2:6-7)
May God’s love be the fuel that drives our call to serve.
Let us pray:
Saint Peter Claver, who became an example for us by showing us the love of God, the light of Christ, and the strength of the Holy Spirit, we pray now that all we say and do, in your honor, be a continuation of your work here on earth. Saint Peter Claver, pray for us. Amen.
