Dear Emmanuel Magazine Subscribers:
My name is Patrick Riley, and I have been associated with Emmanuel since 1971, when I wrote my first book review for the magazine. Rev. Raymond Tartre SSS, was editor at the time, and book reviews had already been an integral part of Emmanuel for decades. I was later appointed book review coordinator by senior editor Rev. Anthony Schueller SSS, a position I held until print production of Emmanuel was suspended in 2021.
When Very Rev. John Thomas Lane SSS, Provincial Superior of the St. Ann Province, decided recently to resurrect the magazine as an on-line journal, he asked me to continue to serve as its book review editor. I am very happy to do so and to collaborate with Dr. Michael DeSanctis, Emmanuel’s newly-appointed senior editor.
During my earlier tenure in this role, I assembled a talented stable of writers from various academic and ecclesiastical positions, each of whom displayed not only expertise in their respective fields but a strong commitment the Church’s teachings on social justice. They provided our readers with insightful perspectives on books from some of the leading Catholic publishing companies in our country. Many of these contributors have since passed on. Consequently, I’ve assembled a new team of knowledgeable women and men eager to offer assessments of books related to spirituality, contemporary social and moral issues, parish life, church and papal history and other topics likely to enrich the lives and ministries of our readership.
I look forward to reviving the Book Review component of Emmanuel and hope, going forward, that readers will not hesitate to share their responses to it or suggestions of books for review at the e-address below.
