The Mustard Seed

There is something beautiful about the image of a mustard seed. A seed does not become a tree overnight. At first, we see nothing. Beneath the soil, however, something is already happening. The roots are growing. Then, after some time, a small shoot appears. It is still fragile and vulnerable. It has to face the sun, the rain, the heat, the cold, and sometimes even drought. Yet it continues to grow.

Our friendship with God is often like that. We give God time every day. But after some weeks or months, we may ask ourselves: Am I really changing? Why are my weaknesses still there? Why do the same difficulties keep coming? Why do I still struggle with the same things? And sometimes, because we cannot see growth, we become discouraged and stop praying. But the fact that we cannot see the roots does not mean that the seed is not growing.

Prayer is not magic. It does not mean that our difficulties will immediately disappear or that our weaknesses will suddenly vanish. Prayer is allowing God to work patiently within us. Growth may be slow, hidden, and almost imperceptible, but God is at work.

The same is true of our friendship with God. It must become something precious to us – a passion that we do not abandon when we do not see immediate results. Whether we experience “rain” or “sunshine,” consolation or dryness, success or difficulty, we keep praying. God is faithful. If we keep watering the seed through prayer, He will make it grow. And one day, perhaps without even realizing it, we will discover that the small seed has become a tree: our faith has matured, our hearts have changed, and our lives have become a place where others can find shelter.

Let us pray:

Lord Jesus, plant the seed of Your Kingdom deeply in our hearts. Teach us not to become discouraged when we do not immediately see the fruits of our prayer. Give us patience in times of dryness, perseverance in times of difficulty, and faith in Your hidden work within us. Amen.
